In this professional development course, you'll get the teacher training you need to deal effectively with serious discipline problems and help even the most challenging students you're teaching make more responsible choices.

In this professional development course, you'll get the teacher training you need to deal effectively with serious discipline problems and help even the most challenging students you're teaching make more responsible choices. You'll discover how to use a new research-based six-step approach to solve severe and chronic discipline problems, including bullying, fighting, using abusive language, stealing, and refusing to work.

You'll learn how to deal with the special problem of attention deficit disorder, find out how to use time-outs effectively, and see how class meetings can help solve class-wide discipline problems.

We'll cover numerous preventative strategies, including 12 actions you and your colleagues can take to prevent problems from occurring in the common areas of your school, and six practical strategies that can prevent student violence.

You'll gain a new understanding of what motivates severe and chronic misbehavior and, more important, what actions will help you effectively find solutions. We'll look at numerous real-life examples set in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms so you can see how to put the ideas into action in your own teaching situation.

Courses are delivered to you through expertly executed lessons, online instruction and interaction with like-minded students. Our courses are designed to deliver all of the benefits of studying in a classroom whilst giving you the flexibility to study at a time and place to suit your needs. You can access your classroom 24/7 from any device with an internet connection.

This course has a 3 month duration. You'll complete comprehensive lessons, quizzes and assignments before submitting your final exam at the end of the course to achieve your certificate. Courses must be completed within the 3 month access period.

What makes some classroom discipline problems so difficult? Students who present severe and chronic discipline problems have reasons behind their misbehavior. They're desperate to find ways to stop the pain of unfilled needs—pain that's driving them to behaviors that hurt themselves or others. In this first lesson, you'll learn exactly what the five basic needs are and how they motivate your students. We'll also step into a few classrooms and learn how creating a needs-fulfilling environment can stop many problems before they begin.

As teachers, it's critical for us to come to a better understanding of students and their innermost drives. We'll begin this lesson by introducing a new six-step approach for reaching out to students to help get their needs met. You'll learn how using these steps will keep you and your students' focus on the future instead of the past, on positives instead of punishment, and on hope instead of despair. By the end of this lesson, you'll know what tactics don't work with students. And you'll have a good understanding of what does work, including the critical actions you must take when dealing with serious discipline problems.

If your goal is to have an effective way of dealing with discipline problems, then you have to have a plan for achieving that goal. Without a plan, you'll most likely react to problems without thinking, making a bad situation worse rather than better. In this lesson, we'll focus on practical steps for creating a classroom discipline plan. We'll compare ineffective plans with ones that work. You'll see how using positives, boundaries, and natural consequences can go a long way to establishing harmony in your classroom.

Punitive time-outs are rarely effective when you're dealing with serious discipline problems. But there's a version of time-out—called a teaching time-out—that teaches children to become problem solvers and to take responsibility for improving their behavior. Today's lesson is devoted to the teaching time-out. You'll learn that you can't force students to behave; you must get their cooperation. By the end of the lesson, you'll have added teaching time-outs to your teachers' toolkit to help you get your students' cooperation.

Just as teaching time-outs can help you solve individual problems, class meetings can help you solve problems that involve groups of students or even a whole class. In this lesson, you'll learn how class meetings allow students to discover that their class is a working, problem-solving unit. You'll see that within the class meeting, each student has both individual and group responsibilities. At the conclusion of the lesson, you'll understand that class meetings serve a variety of educational and social purposes, not the least of which is teaching students how to work together to find solutions to problems. Class meetings can also prevent discipline problems by building a trusting, respectful, and productive classroom atmosphere.

High school students can present special discipline problems. But children who threaten, intimidate, or bully another person engage in this behavior only to satisfy their basic needs. In today's lesson, you'll learn how responsible teachers can connect with these students to address their unfulfilled needs. And you'll gain the necessary tools to solve problems of verbal abuse, stealing, and fighting.

The middle school years can be a challenging experience for both teachers and students. Why? It can be a time of terrible uncertainty and trepidation for children. For many of them, it seems that every aspect of their lives is in flux. In this lesson, you'll learn how to help middle school students when their behavior gets out of hand. You'll see specifically how to effectively deal with students who do no school work, students who talk back, and students who engage in vandalism.

Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 experience many emotional ups and downs in their lives, which can impact their performance and behavior in school. In this lesson, you'll find out how to help these children deal with emotions such as insecurity, fear, resentment, and anger. You'll also learn how to use the six-step approach to solve problems involving bullying, constant talking, and cheating.

Kindergarten through third grade can an exciting, fun time for both students and teachers. It can also be extremely frustrating and stressful when you have to deal with discipline problems. In this lesson, you'll learn why solving problems quickly and efficiently at this age level is critical. Problems left unchecked can easily escalate into situations that can put a stop to teaching and learning. In addition, you'll learn step-by-step solutions to some specific problems: not sharing, temper tantrums, and throwing things.

In today's world, violence can occur in any school. Being prepared and knowing what to do in these intense situations can prevent serious injury to you and to students. In this very important lesson, you'll learn about the causes of violent behavior and how to recognize warning signs. Then you'll examine three scenarios based on actual events and learn what to do when confronted with potentially violent situations at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

In this lesson, we'll examine aspects of school discipline that are integral to classroom management. First, you'll learn about the special problems substitute teachers encounter and what steps they can take to deal effectively with classroom discipline. Next, we'll focus on Attention Deficit Disorder and learn 35 actions you can take to help students improve their attention spans. Finally, you'll learn how academic problems can lead to discipline problems, along with steps to help students who are struggling academically.

It's time to get practical! In this lesson, you'll take what you've learned in the first 11 lessons to create strategies for preventing severe and chronic discipline problems. You'll learn nine measures to prevent severe and chronic problems from occurring in your classroom. Then you'll see 12 actions you and your colleagues can take to prevent problems from occurring in the common areas of your school. To wrap things up, we'll cover six practical ways to prevent violence from occurring at your school. This lesson echoes the key point in this course: The best way to deal with chronic and severe discipline problems is to prevent them from happening in the first place!

Learn how to have more successful relationships with difficult bosses, co-workers, students, neighbors, or relatives.

Do you know people whose behavior makes completing even the simplest tasks difficult? Would you like to learn how to have more successful relationships with difficult bosses, co-workers, students, neighbors or family members? Join this class and get helpful information for understanding yourself, solving people problems, and improving your relationships and personal and professional productivity.

In our first lesson, you'll find out the answers to four very important questions that impact the success of your relationships with others. The answers to these questions will help you identify your preferred communication styles. By the time you finish this lesson, your skills for achieving successful relationships will markedly increase.

In this lesson, you'll begin to build a database about not only your difficult people (those who are different in communication style from you), but also enhance your skills in reviewing and resolving problems with them. You'll learn to see things from others' viewpoints based on their needs, values, beliefs, experiences, skills, knowledge, and self-interests. You'll also learn to use a well-structured approach to carefully review all aspects of difficult situations by answering these questions: who? what? where? when? how? and why? And by answering these questions, you'll review specifically who your difficult people are, what they're like, how you typically react to them, and their response to your actions. These answers will enhance your ability to find solutions to conflict rather than defeat.

Today, we'll discuss four types of hostile, pushy, and rude people—with the emphasis on "hostile." These are people who want to control everything and everyone but have no self-control. This group is aggressive and unfriendly, and is appropriately called Hostile-Aggressives and/or Sensors. You'll learn how to analyze your own interactions, and see why some people are so concerned with "getting their job done" that they pay little attention to relationships with others. By observing others closely, you'll learn to read their identifying characteristics, and once you can identify which type of person you're dealing with, you'll be able to choose appropriate reactions to their hostile behaviors.

In today's lesson, you'll learn appropriate options for interacting well with those who are stubborn, tight-lipped, and critical—the people known as Negative-Passives and/or Thinkers. By comparing your own group of Thinkers and Sensors, you'll soon see why Thinkers are much more passive than Sensors. They're also more organized, precise, and thorough. You'll easily recognize Thinkers you know because they're perfectionists—always moving slowly and cautiously. By the time you finish this lesson, you'll know some specific approaches you can use to deal with this group.

In this lesson, you'll learn and practice appropriate options for dealing effectively with aggressive subcategories of Intuitors whom you'll learn to recognize because of their fashionable and stylish appearances, as well as their stimulating, cluttered, and friendly workplaces. You've probably experienced what happens when Intuitors aren't getting their needs met. They become neglectors, empire builders, and prima donnas. And by the time you finish this lesson, you'll know how to deal with each one.

Today, we'll take another look at Relaters and see how they differ from Intuitors, who are also people-focused. Plus, you'll learn ways to effectively handle the difficult subcategories of Relaters. You'll see from examples that Relaters are more passive than Intuitors, they concentrate more on pleasing others than Intuitors do, they're very attentive to the needs of others, and they set high value on friendships and being accepted by others. But if their needs aren't met, they may become approval-seeking to the extreme. We'll go over how to deal with them in today's lesson.

Some of your difficult people probably also feel that you're their difficult person, but you may be totally unaware of this. Do you feel that ignorance is really bliss? You wouldn't if you value relationships with others as well as personal and professional success. If so, you need to know whose difficult person you may be. We'll go through some exercises in this lesson that should help you figure it out. The greater your versatility, the more likely you are to experience win-win relationships—those in which the needs of everyone in a relationship are met.

In this lesson, you'll work toward improving your own flexibility skills: Confidence, tolerance, empathy, positivity, and respect. To help, you'll answer a few questions about each of your own skill sets as you move through the lesson's materials. You'll also select and use techniques and processes to increase or improve your flexibility skills, and then you'll review your success or results achieved.

In today's lesson, you'll learn that a certain set of characteristics is essential if you want to relate well with others. As you'll find out today, you must first improve your versatility skills to maintain a positive attitude, and then learn to view obstacles and problems as "opportunities." You'll also learn that versatility is based on your levels of resilience, vision, attentiveness, competence, and self-correction. Plus, you'll review techniques and processes by which you may increase or improve your versatility skills, and then apply the skills to your own situations and relationships and analyze their effectiveness.

After we finish today's lesson, you'll understand what assertiveness is and what it isn't. You'll begin to see why assertive behavior is so important to your success in getting along well with others, and you'll carefully examine your own level of assertiveness, know which of your skills need fine-tuning, and have access to the tools needed to accomplish your tune up. You'll learn that assertiveness involves taking responsibility for getting your own needs met in a way that also preserves the dignity and rights of others. Plus, you'll learn how to both show and tell others through assertive actions and language what you mean and what you need or want.

You're going to be amazed by the results you'll be able to accomplish after you complete this lesson! The assertive-communication techniques you'll practice are simple, yet powerful. You'll learn to use self-disclosure appropriately to share information about yourself—your thoughts, feelings, and opinions—to build relationship trust and common ground. Then you'll find out how to use persistence, or the broken record technique, to get results from someone who's not listening to your wants or needs. Next, you'll find out how to effectively use your voice and language assertively to improve your relationships. Added to the many other techniques you've already explored in this course, you'll now have all the tools you need to improve and maintain even your most difficult relationships.

Today in our final lesson, you may be surprised to discover that your listening skills need improvement because listening well is a complex process in which your own selective filtering often keeps you from real understanding. Even more astounding, we spend more time listening every day than we do in other types of communication, yet a majority of us have never learned how to listen effectively. When paired with assertive speaking skills and other nonverbal skills, assertive listening skills will give you a lot more personal control over difficult situations—including living and working with difficult people.
