Every second counts during a medical emergency. Learn how to respond if someone needs your help.

What would you do if a member of your family suffered a medical emergency? You could certainly call for trained emergency medical responders, but what would you do while you're waiting for them to arrive?

Every second counts during a medical emergency. Recognising the early signs and symptoms of common medical conditions and providing appropriate treatment can mean a better outcome for the patient. Early recognition and intervention can greatly reduce the seriousness of the illness, which means a shorter hospital stay and lower medical costs. It's also very satisfying to know how to help someone in a time of need.

This course will identify common medical emergencies affecting children and adults, help you recognise signs and symptoms, and teach you how to render appropriate emergency care. For adults, you will learn how to recognise and manage chest pain, heart attack, stroke, diabetic problems, seizures, breathing difficulty, burns, and allergic reactions. For children, you will also learn about poisoning, fever, childhood illnesses, injuries from accidents, and the signs of abuse.

Courses are delivered to you through expertly executed lessons, online instruction and interaction with like-minded students. Our courses are designed to deliver all of the benefits of studying in a classroom whilst giving you the flexibility to study at a time and place to suit your needs. You can access your classroom 24/7 from any device with an internet connection.

This course has a 3 month duration. You'll complete comprehensive lessons, quizzes and assignments before submitting your final exam at the end of the course to achieve your certificate. Courses must be completed within the 3 month access period.

Every day, thousands of medical emergencies occur in the United States. In our first lesson, you'll learn what happens when someone dials 911 to report the emergency. You'll see how emergency 911 operators do their jobs, who will respond to the emergency, and what will happen after emergency medical services personnel arrive at the scene. We'll also explore how you can help without exposing yourself to legal liability. Then, we'll start going over the human body so you'll know why your organs work like they do!

Today, you'll learn how to make sure you stay safe at the scene of an emergency—from watching out for traffic and identifying hazards, to protecting yourself from transmitted diseases. Then, you'll learn the ABCs of emergency care so you'll know what steps to take in order to help someone in need. Also, you'll see how to take a reading of a patient's respiration and pulse to determine if the heart and lungs are working normally.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for adults in the USA. In today's lesson, you'll learn what causes heart disease and how you and your family can prevent it from happening to yourselves. We'll discuss angina and heart attacks, and I'll tell you why you may not want your family member to go to the closest hospital if you suspect they may be having heart problems!

Would you know what to do if your child suddenly choked on a small toy or piece of food? Today's lesson addresses choking and breathing problems, the leading causes of accidental deaths in children. You'll also learn about asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, and carbon monoxide poisoning. And I'll show you how using everyday household cleaning products might be dangerous!

In this lesson, you'll learn all about the body's master organ—the brain! We'll discuss concussions, head injuries, seizures, and strokes. You'll see how the pupils of the eyes give you important information about brain function, and how to recognize the signs of a stroke, one of the most common events leading to adult disability.

Do you know what the largest organ of the body is? Surprise—it's your skin! In today's lesson, we'll go over what happens when you injure your skin—whether you've scraped, cut, torn, punctured, or burned it. We'll also go over how to recognize the signs of bleeding, even if the bleeding is internal and out of your sight. You'll see how to stop all types of bleeding and how to treat all types of burns, including electrical, chemical, thermal, and even severe sunburns!

In today's lesson, you'll learn all about shock . . . not the electrical kind, but the type that prevents oxygen from getting to your body's cells. You'll learn how to recognize and treat shock caused by infections, allergic reactions, bleeding, breathing problems, diabetes, heart problems, spinal injuries, and simple fainting. You'll also see what to look for to determine if an unconscious person has a chronic medical problem, with no one around to tell you about it!

Today, we'll go in depth to learn about underlying medical problems such as diabetes, gallstones, hepatitis, appendicitis, and kidney stones. You'll also learn about heat and cold emergencies, from heat exhaustion and heat stroke to frostbite and hypothermia. And you'll find out what's happening if your patient's eyeballs look yellow!

Almost 3 million children are victims of accidental poisoning each year. In this lesson, you'll learn how poisoning occurs—how it gets into a child's body through absorption, inhalation, ingestion, or injection. You'll see why poison control centers have been established throughout the country and how you can reach one using a single phone number. Most important, you'll learn what to do and what not to do before medical help arrives at your house.

Today, we'll focus on injuries to the bones and joints. We'll explore fractures, sprains, and strains, as well as how to handle neck and back injuries without causing further harm to your patient. You'll learn how to use common items to make splints to stabilize an arm or leg until help arrives. Then, we'll talk about common sports injuries affecting adults and children. You'll also learn about athletic trainers and the roles they serve in organized team sports.

Children aren't just little adults! In this lesson, you'll learn how children react to injury and illness, and how you can interact with them during the various stages they go through as they grow up. You'll learn the differences in their anatomy as they get bigger, how their vital signs change, and how they're so much more susceptible to shock than adults are. And we'll explore common childhood emergencies such as infection, fever, and seizures. Then, we'll examine the early warning signs of substance abuse among teenagers and talk about a difficult topic—teen suicide and self-injury.

In our final lesson, you'll learn about illnesses common to children—croup, epiglottitis, asthma, and meningitis. We'll also explore SIDS—Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and learn why researchers think it occurs and steps you can take to reduce its risk. We'll close by discussing the nationwide problem of child neglect and abuse, how to recognize the signs and symptoms of physical and sexual abuse, and why just one phone call can make a major positive step in an abused child's life!

Further the ideals and goals of your nonprofit by learning to compete more effectively for members, media attention, donors, clients, and volunteers.

Under pressure to increase membership, expand program value, attract media, entice donors, and develop volunteers, all while keeping an eye on the bottom line?

In the face of stiff competition, more worthwhile causes, more regulations, more watchdog agencies, and fewer funding opportunities, you need to work smarter—not longer.

This course will show you how to use powerful marketing techniques to compete more effectively for customers, donors, members, and volunteers. You'll also learn how to persuade the media to communicate your organisation's message and further its ideals and goals.

Instructor Linda Kissam draws on her extensive nonprofit experience to share effective, practical, and easy-to-implement strategies that you can put to immediate use. Before you know it, you'll be ready to improve your market share by learning to evaluate and implement effective promotions, advertising campaigns, and communication techniques.

If your organisation relies on a diverse mix of fees, events, and/or contributions for support, you're sure to find this information-packed course indispensible.

Courses are delivered to you through expertly executed lessons, online instruction and interaction with like-minded students. Our courses are designed to deliver all of the benefits of studying in a classroom whilst giving you the flexibility to study at a time and place to suit your needs. This course has a 3 month duration. You'll complete comprehensive lessons, quizzes and assignments before submitting your final exam at the end of the course to achieve your certificate. Courses must be completed within the 3 month access period.

In our first lesson, you'll learn the basics of marketing and the common terminology used in the marketing field. This will all be important to you because it will help you understand the role that marketing plays in your nonprofit organization and the benefits it can bring to those you serve.

In today's lesson, we'll explore how and why nonprofit marketing succeeds. You'll learn to tie benefits to features to create a winning marketing program for your organization. I'll show you how to set marketing goals and objectives—no more guessing for you! You'll also learn how to think big, imagine great things, and understand how to measure your success. By the end of this lesson, you'll think like a professional marketer, ready to take on any challenge.

Four marketing techniques work great in helping nonprofits find their niche, and they're all virtually free! We'll go over all four of them in today's lesson. You'll also learn how to differentiate your nonprofit from others and you'll come to understand what targeting clients, positioning, and branding can do for your organization. I'll show you how to apply these marketing tools to help your organization stand out, creating a platform where your organization can proudly show its stuff!

In today's lesson, you'll learn how to conduct a marketing audit using the six P's: Product, Publics, Price, Place, Production, and Promotion. A marketing audit is a reality test. You'll assess in detail what it will take to achieve your agency's marketing goals, and how your existing programs are serving your organization. I'll show you why it's best to see that what you thought was pure genius, really is pure genius—or not. Armed with this information, you'll be ready to begin developing your actual marketing plan.

Successful nonprofits either intuitively or implicitly have a strategy. And they'll use it for one purpose only: To help the nonprofit do a better job of getting to where it wants to go. In this lesson, we're going to look at different types of strategies that help nonprofits focus their resources and energy to meet their goals and objectives. This is a powerful lesson that creates another practical and informative management tool for your marketing efforts.

Once the word is out that your agency has money to advertise, you become fair game for every ad salesperson out there. Considering the money you invest in advertising isn't your own and you have to justify your expenses, it's prudent to know something about what works best and why. This lesson provides timely information that will empower you to make wise advertising choices on behalf of your nonprofit.

There's so much to learn about marketing and advertising on the Internet that I could write a whole class on it. In this lesson, I'll provide you with an introduction to this fascinating subject, and I'll give you three specific tools for your advertising toolbox: Web site design, Web site ads, and event support. With just these three tools, you can build an Internet strategy that is second to none.

In today's lesson, we'll take a close look at who your volunteers are, what those volunteers bring to the workplace, and how to maximize their contributions to your marketing efforts.

Today, we'll look at three different ways to get your message across to the public: PR, media outreach, and publicity. Each is unique in its own way, but they all blend harmoniously in the end to bring forth a brilliant program that will get your nonprofit noticed!

Marketing professionals understand the importance of marketing plans. But not everyone in your nonprofit is a marketing professional, nor does everyone always think like a marketing professional. To some, writing a marketing plan is a waste of time. In this lesson, you'll understand not only why your nonprofit needs a marketing plan, but also how to put a small and a large one together on your own.

In today's lesson, we'll follow a series of steps that will lead you through the promotion planning process. We look at image, message, promotion, and implementation. We've been building up to this lesson for five weeks. Here's where you'll put everything together and learn to promote the most important thing on your mind—your nonprofit.

Your board and membership have expectations for what your marketing program should be doing and what constitutes success. But these don't always coincide with how marketing really works and what role it actually plays in promoting your agency. These disconnects can spell trouble, often raising doubts about how well either side is tuned in to the realities of how an effective marketing program actually works. In our final lesson, we'll look at the last piece of the marketing puzzle: How to evaluate your marketing program. We'll look at why you need to evaluate your program and how to do it.
