What we eat profoundly affects our health and well-being: Obesity is at epidemic proportions in the United States. Many of us eat more than we require; we eat when we are rushed; we don't understand how various food elements interact, and we are not as knowledgeable as we could be about various diet types and their effects on our health. The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the role of food and health in human history. The various elements of nutrition and some of the most common types of diets are explored.

Most individuals enjoy sitting down and eating a delicious meal. Food provides an opportunity to socialize and, if the food is nutritious, it also supports a healthy body and mind. However, if an individual is stressed, the nutrients they eat are not able to be utilized as effectively as when they are relaxed. If stress causes an individual to eat food that is not nutritious, health issues can result. Nutrition, stress, and the immune system are closely related. The goals of this course are to describe the relationship between food and emotions; to explain the stress response; to discuss the effects of stress on nutrition and health; to define mindful eating and methods of eating mindfully; and to examine elements of nutrition that support a healthy immune system.

Two-thirds of adults and one-third of children in the United States are overweight or obese. Left unchecked, the effects of this crisis on the nation's health, health-care costs, and productivity could be catastrophic. As a nation, we're getting more obese every day, many of our children are obese, and our life expectancies are much shorter because of it, despite trying many types of diets, eating less, and moving more. The goal of this course is to examine the extent of obesity in the United States; explain the difference between being overweight and being obese; list the causes of overweight and obesity; examine the health and economic consequences of obesity; and discuss pharmaceutical and surgical options for obese individuals.

Our diet has a profound impact on our health and well-being, yet many of us are not aware of where our food originated. We eat toxic, irradiated, or genetically altered foods, and we eat more than we need. How can we change our eating habits and become more conscious of what we eat, why we eat it, and how it is prepared? The goals of this course are to provide an overview of the types of toxins found in food and to examine the effects of irradiation, genetically altered foods, and food allergies on our health.

Food is a dynamic force that interacts with our bodies on multiple levels: the physical level, the mental-emotional level, and the energetic or spiritual level. Conscious eating involves an awareness of the eating process from beginning to end, and it includes thinking about how dietary choices affect others. Any food choice that is truly good for an individual's physical health and well-being will also be good for his/her spiritual well-being. Today's food landscape is dominated by factory farms and food industry practices that violate spiritual principles, as well as human and animal rights, and damage the health of the planet. The goal of this course is to provide an overview the concept of spiritual, conscious eating, examine the effects of unconsious eating on the health of 0humans, animals, and plants, and provide guidelines for individuals who seek to support a lifestyle that includes spiritual nutrition practices.

An important element of health is the ability to understand what is in the food we eat. Knowing how to read and understand food labels can help individuals make healthier food choices. Many consumers do not fully understand what the labels on their food means in terms of nutritional value or the way the food was produced, raised, and manufactured. &nbsp; With this knowledge, understanding the labels becomes easier and making healthy choices are the result. The goal of this course is to provide an overview of food labels, describe how to read a Nutrition Fact label, explain food claims in terms of nutritional value, define what <em>organic</em> means, examine the four organic principles, and identify various food labels in terms of their significance to food products.

While modern medicine has produced many scientific advances, one of the most important "advances" has been the recognition of the value of herbs and herbalism. After all, nature and plants have been an essential part of everyday life since the beginning of recorded history. Used for medicine, clothing, food, and in religious ceremonies, in many health belief systems, plants are considered a gift of nature and valued for their healing effects. The goal of this course is to provide an examination of the role of herbs and herbalists, herb processing, how herbalists are trained, and issues facing the use of herbs.

Most Americans consume far more sugar than they require, and this contributes to obesity as well as many types of diseases. The role of sugar in the American diet is an important one, and understanding its effect on the body and its role in inflammation and disease can significantly impact one's health. Alternatives to refined sugar are numerous, but are they safe and effective? The goal of this course is to provide a historical overview of the role of sugar in the American diet, describe the various definitions of sugar, briefly examine glucose metabolism and the health effects of too much dietary sugar, explain the glycemic index, identify both artificial and natural alternatives to sugar, and list methods of reducing dietary sugar intake.

Probiotics are live organisms believed to be healthy for the host organism. They are used globally to improve the health and well-being of animals and human beings. Sales of probiotic supplements have soared in recent years on the basis of intriguing research that demonstrates potential benefits for many chronic conditions, including cancer. With the rise in interest in integrative health as well as complementary and alternative therapies, this trend is likely to continue. The goal of this course is to examine what probiotics are (and are not), how they affect our health, the various categories of probiotics, the risks and benefits of their use, how to select a probiotic, pertinent regulatory considerations, and the current research on their use.

Courses are delivered to you through expertly executed lessons, online instruction and interaction with like-minded students. This course has a 3 month duration. You'll complete comprehensive lessons, quizzes and assignments before submitting your final exam at the end of the course to achieve your certificate. Courses must be completed within the 3 month access period.

In this first lesson, you'll learn the difference between financial knowledge and business acumen in a way that's easy to understand. You'll also be introduced to a few basic financial strategies and explore what business finance can do for you, your company, and your personal finances.

To gain a strong foundation in business finance, you need understand the basic business model, its components, and how they fit into the larger organization. You'll see how finances flow through the business and begin to master basic financial terminology. At the end of this lesson, you'll be able to apply what you've learned to your personal household and finances.

Do you know what ROI refers to? What's a Sales Forecast, and why is it so important? In this lesson, you'll learn these terms and many more. You'll also gain an understanding of financial forces, which provide a foundation for developing financial strategies and driving profit. You'll wrap up the lesson with a look at a very real example of the impact of unplanned expenses on the bottom line.

Financial statements can be one of the most mysterious parts of business finance. As you'll see, however, all you need is basic information about what is reported and why to make sense of the three basic financial statements. With this lesson under your belt, you'll be ready to take on the next crucial step in mastering business finance: recording and tracking the annual finances on these statements.

In this lesson, you'll gain a broader understanding of the first of the financial statements we'll be considering: the Income Statement. You'll visit the hypothetical company Bouncy Balls Incorporated (BBI), and examine its annual statement to comprehend what all these numbers mean. You'll also learn what's recorded on the Income Statement and how to analyze it using financial ratios to gain some valuable perspective on how BBI is doing.

Still working with the fictitious company BBI, you'll explore what information is included in the Balance Sheet, how it differs from the other financial statements, and how to analyze it using financial ratios.&nbsp; You'll continue your work to determine BBI's financial position and see where changes in business strategy may be needed.

You'll finish your introduction to the basic financial statements as you review the Statement of Cash Flows. You'll see how financial personnel use this statement as you continue your tour of BBI. As you work through the Statement of Cash Flows, you'll start to put all of the information together to improve your understanding of BBI's financial position.

In this lesson, you'll listen in at a roundtable meeting of executives at BBI as they discuss the company's financial statements.&nbsp; The meeting offers a great opportunity for you to get an insider's look into how executives develop another component of a company's financial filings&mdash;the Management's Discussion &amp; Analysis (MD&amp;A). As you learn to interpret this filing, you'll gain valuable insights into how you can understand the "story behind the numbers" for any company.

Now you're going to put all of the financial knowledge you've gained during this course to work as you consider some strategies for improving BBI's financial condition.&nbsp; You'll explore how executives bring their financial knowledge in line with business needs to make solid business decisions that will have a positive impact on the company financials.

In this lesson, you'll tackle a key issue in business: cost cutting. Expenses are such a huge part of business.&nbsp; Here, you'll see how to use your new knowledge of financial reporting and your business acumen skills to develop strategies that have a positive impact on a company's bottom line.

Continuing your exploration of financial strategy, you'll use the decision-making process to examine the inventory situation at BBI and develop strategies to increase supply and production efficiencies.&nbsp; You'll also see how to develop strategies to improve the BBI cash position so that more things can be done to increase the bottom line.

Now that you've gone through various strategies to increase sales, decrease expenses, and better manage company assets, it's time to see how to complete an overall strategic analysis of an organization.&nbsp; You'll increase your ability to think "big picture" and see how to take advantage of opportunities in your workplace and personal life.&nbsp; This lesson focuses on using an analytical process called SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) to develop strategies to move your business and your personal financial life in a positive direction.&nbsp; You'll also explore a process for successfully implementing the strategies you develop.

Learn how to guard against scam artists, identity thieves, predatory lenders, and abusive debt collectors.

Do you worry about criminals stealing your identity or scammers cheating you out of your money? Are you feeling threatened by abusive debt collectors or predatory lenders? If so, this course can give you the help you need.

In these lessons, you'll see how to spot the scams and rip-offs that can cost you money or ruin your credit. You'll explore threats including identity fraud, Internet and credit card scams, and deceptive service contracts. If you're planning to buy land or a home, you'll learn to avoid real estate scams—and if you're buying a car, you'll get the inside story on car dealers' tricks.

And that's not all! If your mortgage is in trouble, you'll find out how to slow down (or even stop) a foreclosure. And if you're getting harassing calls from debt collectors, your course instructor—a former Assistant District Attorney—will bring you up to speed on the federal and state laws that can give you peace of mind. You'll also see how to obtain your credit score and how to clean up your credit history.

By the time you finish this course, you'll be prepared to protect your credit score, your identity, and your bank accounts. In addition, you'll have the legal know-how you need to make mortgage holders, credit card companies, and debt collectors play by the rules.

Courses are delivered to you through expertly executed lessons, online instruction and interaction with like-minded students. Our courses are designed to deliver all of the benefits of studying in a classroom whilst giving you the flexibility to study at a time and place to suit your needs. You can access your classroom 24/7 from any device with an internet connection.

This course has a 3 month duration. You'll complete comprehensive lessons, quizzes and assignments before submitting your final exam at the end of the course to achieve your certificate. Courses must be completed within the 3 month access period.

In this first lesson, we'll concentrate on real estate scams. This is a particularly lucrative field for con artists, so we'll discuss all the different ways scammers can fool victims. We'll talk about foreclosure sales, tax liens, rental scams, and bogus escrow fees. By the end of this lesson, you'll be looking differently at newspaper ads that promise quick riches in real estate.

In this lesson, we&rsquo;ll talk about what could be a delicate situation: falling behind on your bills and being hounded by bill collectors. I&rsquo;m going to explain the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, which is a federal law, and you&rsquo;ll see exactly what debt collectors can and can&rsquo;t do. You&rsquo;ll also learn exactly what your rights are and how you can make harassing phone calls stop. I&rsquo;ll share with you some ready-made statements that you can repeat over the phone. Finally, you&rsquo;ll learn what to do if a debt collector crosses the line. You&rsquo;ll find out that not only can you make the phone calls stop, but you can also bring suit against someone who violates the statutes.

As long as there have been human beings, there have been thieves. In this lesson, we&rsquo;re going to take a look at Internet scams, credit card theft, and how you can protect yourself against both. First, we&rsquo;ll take a look at some pretty common Internet scams, and I&rsquo;ll explain how you can protect your money. Then we&rsquo;ll take on credit card theft and fraud, ending up with a discussion of the federal, state, and local agencies that investigate and prosecute people who commit these crimes. At the conclusion of this lesson, you should breathe a lot easier knowing that you have the savvy to protect yourself from Internet scams and credit card thieves.

Credit is the real currency of our economy. This means that your credit score is vitally important. In today&rsquo;s lesson, we&rsquo;re going to examine your credit score: how it&rsquo;s calculated, how credit reports work, how you can change information on the report, and also how you can improve your overall credit. First, we&rsquo;ll walk through exactly how credit agencies establish your credit history. You&rsquo;ll learn about that all-important credit score number that follows you wherever you go. Then we&rsquo;ll talk about the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which is a piece of federal legislation that governs how, when, and why credit scores can be tabulated. More important, you&rsquo;ll learn how the FCRA specifies what you can do to remove incorrect items on your credit history. Next, we&rsquo;ll talk about scams to supposedly &ldquo;clean up&rdquo; your credit history. We&rsquo;ll finish the lesson by discussing the correct and legal methods you can use that really will improve your credit score.

In this lesson, we&rsquo;ll examine the issues surrounding predatory lending and other questionable lending practices. Predatory lending is something that might actually cost you more money than fraud&mdash;and it&rsquo;s perfectly legal. It reaches into many areas, but especially into home mortgages. We&rsquo;ll also talk about another common predatory lending practice: payday loans. You&rsquo;ll see how they can drain a person dry. By the conclusion of this lesson, you&rsquo;ll know how to avoid predatory lenders and keep more of your hard-earned money.

In today&rsquo;s lesson, we&rsquo;ll cover a familiar topic: credit cards. We&rsquo;ll be dissecting everything you need to know about terms, interest rates, and fees. We&rsquo;ll begin with a brief history of credit cards, and then I&rsquo;ll show you all the different factors you need to consider before choosing one. Then I&rsquo;ll talk about the credit card agreement and why it&rsquo;s important to pay attention to it. Finally, we&rsquo;ll take a look at some credit card scams you should be aware of. By the conclusion of this lesson, you should feel well-prepared to apply for a credit card that will bring you the best value and convenience possible.

As long as there have been businesses, there have been unscrupulous business practices. In this lesson, we&rsquo;re going to examine specific types of deceptive practices&mdash;including bait and switch, passing off one type of goods for another, and outright fraud&mdash;and show you how to avoid them. Unscrupulous retailers, especially Internet merchants, are coming up with new ways to dupe us all the time. You&rsquo;ll learn how to look for warning signs that something may not be what it&rsquo;s advertised to be and use caution to help guide you. Even the most careful consumer can fall prey to deceptive business practices, though, so you'll also be gathering lots of information on what to do after the fact.

In today&rsquo;s lesson, we&rsquo;ll talk about scams and rip-offs directly related to cars. If you plan to buy, lease, or sell a car one day, this is the lesson for you! We&rsquo;ll start off with a discussion about leasing cars and some of the most common tricks, scams, and outright crimes that dealers carry out every day. Then we&rsquo;ll move on to scams involving buying and selling a car. Along the way, we&rsquo;ll demystify a lot of terminology that has crept into the auto buying and leasing business. By the time you&rsquo;ve finished this lesson, you&rsquo;ll be ready to march down to the car dealer, negotiate the best possible deal for yourself, and save thousands of dollars.

It seems like every time you buy something these days, you&rsquo;re offered the opportunity to purchase an extended warranty. These warranties are tempting, but are they really worth it? That&rsquo;s the question we&rsquo;ll be answering in this lesson. We&rsquo;ll begin by learning exactly what a warranty is, along with a little history of how warranties began. Then we&rsquo;ll talk about two kinds of warranties: express and implied. After that, we&rsquo;ll turn our attention to extended warranties, something I&rsquo;m sure a car dealer or retailer has dangled before you at one time or another. By the time you finish this lesson, you should have all the knowledge you need to expertly evaluate any warranty you might be thinking about purchasing.

You&rsquo;ve undoubtedly heard about lawsuits in which people have sued over products that have injured them. In this lesson, we&rsquo;re going to take a look at this area of law and see how it&rsquo;s entirely possible to bring such a case and what will happen when you do. Such lawsuits fall under the category of product liability cases, so our focus for this lesson is to understand what product liability is all about. Once you have a solid understanding of product liability, you can then figure out if your case falls into the product liability area.

In previous lessons, we&rsquo;ve talked about scams, rip-offs, and product liability cases. Suppose you want to sue the con man who swindled you, the corporation whose product hurt you, or someone else. How do you go about doing it? That&rsquo;s what we&rsquo;ll focus on in this lesson. We&rsquo;ll take a look at the process you would follow if you decided to bring a lawsuit. By the time you finish this lesson, you&rsquo;ll know how to bring a small claims action or even a full-blown lawsuit in state or federal court.

In this final lesson, we will address a few more scams and rip-offs that we have not yet covered. We&rsquo;ll focus on cons and schemes that you&rsquo;re likely to run into at some point and that you need to protect yourself against. We will be discussing everything from home repair scams to Ponzi schemes. Along the way, you&rsquo;ll also be getting the information that you need to protect yourself and the resources to contact the proper authorities if you feel that you have been the victim of any of these illegal activities. By the time you finish this lesson, you should be well-armed to spot the many ways in which unscrupulous folks can take advantage of you. With what you&rsquo;ll learn in this lesson&mdash;as well as what you&rsquo;ve learned throughout the course&mdash;you can count yourself a savvy and well-informed consumer.

Gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the marvelous complexity of the human body.

This self-paced online course begins with an explanation of the nature of matter and a review of the principles of chemistry that are important to human physiology. We'll place an emphasis on the organisation of the human body and the differences between nonliving matter and living organisms. We'll also cover cell anatomy and physiology because all life processes are ultimately carried out at the cellular level. You'll also learn principles of genetics and gain an understanding of how traits are passed from one generation to the next.

After we've established this foundation, we'll survey the anatomy and physiology of each of our 11 organ systems. You'll learn how our nervous system allows us to receive, process, and interpret sensation and send messages to our muscles and glands. We'll cover the skeletal and muscular systems, learning how they make movement possible, and also about some of their little-known but equally essential functions.

This course explains how the circulatory and respiratory systems work together to provide our bodies with the oxygen our tissues need, and how they work together with the skin and kidneys to rid our bodies of wastes. You'll learn how our bodies fight off diseases, and how our digestive system converts the food we eat into energy and the tissues of our bodies. We'll also spend time on the endocrine system, which supplies the hormones we need for our survival, and the reproductive system, that group of organs that allows life to be passed on to another generation.

We'll also discuss functions of the different organ systems that you'll probably find surprising. In addition, each lesson includes information about specific disorders that sometimes happen to our bodies, and we'll also talk about some recent advances in medicine. By the end of this course, you'll have a greater appreciation and understanding of the marvelous complexity of the human body!

Our first lesson will introduce you to the fascinating subject of human anatomy and physiology. Since chemical reactions drive all of our bodies' functions, we'll start by reviewing some basic chemistry. Then we'll discuss how the human body is organized and the four main types of molecules it contains. We'll even touch on a little history because humans used to have some pretty funny ideas about living organisms. Later, you'll learn why a living human being is so different from one who's died. Finally, we'll discuss homeostasis—that drive we have to keep many different variables (like temperature and blood pressure) within a narrow range. By the time you're done with this lesson, you'll be ready to learn more about the structure and function of our bodies.

The smallest living unit of the body is the cell, and it's so amazing, it deserves a lesson of its own. Even though almost all cells are microscopic, they're jam-packed with many different kinds of organelles and surrounded by complex membranes. I think you'll be amazed at their complexity as we discuss their different functions. We'll also talk about how cells reproduce, and we'll finish up with a discussion on cancer—which is cell reproduction gone amok.

In this lesson, we'll tackle the subject of heredity. It's probably the most technical of all the lessons because we'll be exploring genetics. You'll learn how genes determine your physical and mental characteristics, and how your parents' genetic material determine these traits. You'll learn the important differences between reproductive cells and all of the other cells in the body. Then we'll spend some time talking about a man who lived in the 1800's—Gregor Mendel, the Father of Genetics—because his insights paved the way for our modern understanding of heredity. After that, we'll discuss some different genetic disorders as you learn about specific mutations in the genetic code that can cause problems.

We'll move on to the organ systems in today's lesson. We'll start with the one I find most interesting—the nervous system. You'll learn how it's organized, its different jobs, and the structures that make thinking, feeling, and moving possible. You'll also learn how the nervous system works when we think we're in danger or we've suddenly been affected by physical pain. We'll use our knowledge about chemistry in this chapter, too, as we talk about how nervous impulses are transmitted. Finally, we'll talk about some disorders of the nervous system—what causes them and their effects.

Our bones have several functions, and some aren't so obvious. For example, did you know that red blood cells are made in your bones? Or that bones store minerals that are essential for the function of your nerves and muscles? In today's lesson on the skeletal system, we'll explore the structure and function of bones, and then we'll talk about different types of joints and the amazing structure of your spinal column. You'll learn about some common disorders of this system and what you can do to keep your bones strong.

Like the skeletal system, the muscular system is crucial for movement, but it has other functions, too. We'll discuss them in detail in today's lesson. Muscles are also a lot more complicated than they appear, so we'll spend some time talking about both the structures that we can see and the structures that we can't see without a microscope. We'll go over some of the specific muscles in the body and how they work together to perform specific movements. You'll also learn why even simple movements involve chemical reactions and a close coordination between this system and the nervous system. In the last chapter, we'll look at several common injuries to different parts of the muscular system.

We'll focus on the respiratory system in this lesson. As you're probably aware, it's the group of organs that allow you to get that crucial substance—oxygen—to all the cells in our body. But your respiratory system has some other functions that we'll touch on in this lesson. You'll learn about the anatomy of your respiratory organs and which muscles are crucial for breathing. You'll also become aware of the differences between ventilation, external respiration, internal respiration, and cellular respiration. And we'll talk about some illnesses that could affect your respiratory system, compromising your ability to breathe.

There's so much to learn about the circulatory system! In this lesson, we'll explore the composition of blood, the various blood cells, and the different kinds of blood vessels in your body. Of course, the heart is a crucial part of the circulatory system, so we'll talk about its chambers, valves, coronary vessels, and electrical system. You'll learn how blood travels around the body and its important functions. We'll spend some time on two of the most common health problems people experience—high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. You'll finish this lesson knowing the importance of taking care of this organ system.

In today's very interesting lesson, you'll learn all about the disease-fighting ability of your body. Did you know that your body is constantly bombarded with germs that want to make you sick? We'll talk about that in this lesson, as well as some of the many ways your body fights back to keep you well. The human body also has a system of vessels (similar to blood vessels) called the lymphatic system. We'll talk about its disease-fighting role as well as some of its other functions. You'll learn about some of the other organs in your body that are involved in the battle against disease. At the end of this lesson, we'll talk about different ways the body's disease-fighting ability can be compromised and why sometimes the body turns on its own cells.

Today we'll take a close look at two different organ systems—the integumentary system (the skin) and the urinary system. Both of these systems work to get rid of waste products that would kill you if they were allowed to build up in your body. You'll learn, too, how important these two systems are in maintaining homeostasis. We'll spend quite a bit of time on the structure of these two systems. People are often surprised to learn how complex even the skin can be. And the structures of the urinary system, particularly the kidneys, are quite amazing. At the end of this lesson, you'll learn about kidney failure and the challenges of dialysis and kidney transplantation.

You'll never think about food the same way again after this lesson on the digestive system! Just writing about it made me want to be a bit more careful about what I eat. You'll learn about all the different structures involved with converting food into the chemicals our bodies need to grow, repair tissues, and carry on all the functions of life. We'll also discuss the role of the three main types of foods and the importance of many different vitamins and minerals. When you finish this lesson, you'll understand the value of eating a variety of foods and how good food choices will enhance your health. We'll spend some time discussing two common digestive disorders, and then we'll talk about one of the most common kinds of cancer—colon cancer.

We'll end this course with a discussion about the endocrine and reproductive systems. You'll learn how the endocrine and nervous systems work together to regulate all of your body's functions. We'll discuss some specific endocrine glands, the hormones they produce, and how they influence each other. Homeostasis again becomes something important to talk about because of the crucial role of the endocrine system. We'll also cover both the female and male reproductive systems. You'll learn about their anatomy and how the endocrine system affects their organs, making reproduction possible. We'll end this chapter with a discussion about two fairly common disorders—diabetes and endometriosis.
